alter ego teams up with GTB and discovers the power of innovation with Ford. The commitment to setting standards for sustainability and efficiency are driven by the need to solve real world problems like urban congestion, population increase, and climate change. Ford’s efforts to use innovative technology to create solutions and actions that can affect the environment positively for our future as well as the future of the automotive industry can be met without compromising efficiency, performance, and range. Ford is changing the way we move and we were there to help bring this concept to life with Colourist Wade Odlum and our VFX team at alter ego and our friends at GTB, Skin and Bones Films, and Saints Editorial.
We began this project creating concepts to help visualize Ford technologies with agency GTB. There were 3 main concepts we worked with: pedestrian detect, evasive steering, and glitch transformation effect, all driven by the orb. In addition to working with our concept artists we ran some rough tests on set and supervised over the 3-day production. From there, Mark Paiva at Saints Editorial proceeded to put together the edit.
We spent a lot of time developing the visualization of steering when working on the look of the evasive barrier. For the final wide shot, agency wanted to capture future Ford innovative plans such as their commitment to electrification. We created a glitch effect to propagate through the shot, transforming EV chargers, the bus express lane, solar bike lanes, more public seating, bike share, and additional buildings in our matte painting. There was a lot of prep work organizing the plates for this shot but once we finally found a progression that made sense, we were able to assemble shot elements from 20 different plates. We ran a lot of different configurations for both the animation of the orb and its path to really capture Ford’s innovative technology, driving change in the world.
